It is not the art that is either effective or ineffective, but the the person doing the art.

THEY ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS EACH OTHER

Each movement can be assimilated to a wave which has a " length " according to the distance between the two fighters.( law seen by MINORU MOCHISUKI of the YOSEIKAN BUDO ).
That's why , if it's grappling, or if it's stricking, it's the same type of movement but with a " length " that is different.
Moreover, i've seen that in any type of martial art, there is a " circular " law : each movement ( strinking or grappling ) is always " circular ".
For those two reasons ( wave / circular ), it's the same type of movements !
The best way to pratice, is to pratice every day and to improve our sense to move according to the distance between the other fighter and our, that means applicate the same principes in different distances.

its all about understanding distance. thats why striking arts should include take down tecs, grappling.

Indeed. The wave as you have called it to me is. Mai Ai, the fighting distance. In the art of kempo linear or circular strikes or kicks play well, to a certain distance, when the opponent moves deep into the mai ai, then it is crucial to adapt to circular movements, such as hooks, knees and elbows.

The combination of a striking art with a grappling and locking art is wonderful and very practical, hence the art i teach, Kempo Ju-jitsu, Kansen Ryu.

As has already been said, constant practice of these distances through passive uki and sparring will give a good solid understanding of the optimisation of mai ai.

Yours in Budo,

Use of technique is a matter of efficiency. What is the fastest response to an attack? How easy is it for your attacker to defend himself against your response?
In principle consider these points:

1 What technique is simpler to use - a punch or joint lock?

2 Which technique can be applied more quickly - an elbow strike or Judo throw?

3 Under the pressure of a real fight which technique will an inexperienced practitioner use with more reliability - a punch or a restraint technique?

4 While you are applying a restraint technique on your attacker how will your attacker respond - probably strikes such as punches. How will you react to these punches - with another attempt at applying a restraint technique or with some strikes of your own? What method of technique would you place your faith in if the shit hits the fan - striking or restraint?

Using strikes allows your arms to remain freer to deliver a follow-up technique if your initial attack fails. This is the point of combination training. With many restraint techniques the arm or arms used to apply the techniques are unavailable for use with follow-up techniques as readily as they are when punching combinations

5 Strikes are often technically simpler than restraint techniques. Hence they are more easily and more sucessfully used in real fights

As a martial artist, what is it the makes us ask the question what is best strike or lock? Neither is best both are for defense! There are times when neither works, the fittest, fastest most tecniqal martial artist will surcum to an attack from a person not fearing death in a rage to save life. You may feel your training has taught you to prepare for all circumstances, believe me it hasnt. How many Sensie or Kanchos have actully been on a battle ground in unarmed combat? That fear for life and death generates strength that no 10dan or any dan for that fact could compete against. That strengh is sometimes seen in metally unstable people, but is present in everyone and just needs to be triggered. The macho mindset of the modern day martial artist is at best overated,by the fact that belief of invincabilty is often shown in dojos that the real world of hate an war elludes their thought of training
Forget what is best strike or lock! You have inside you what is best, just keep it harnest.there is a force bigger than all of us in everyone of us.Train hard,be solid and enjoy

For those of you who have never been in a real fight and military combat, it's a matter of adjusting to the situation and reacting and responding to what is happening around you whether your body is tired or weak, strong or energetic. Real combat is chaotic and requires constant adjusting with many failed attempts or successes in one's approach. There are a lot of variants. A combination of ANY technique that works at the time of the event is what matters, not preconceived techniques whether striking or grappling because they all go together, weapons, pressure points, throwing, tripping, use of bodily fluids, gouging, biting, using a machine gun, blowing yourself up...all of these are part of combat, THERE IS NO RULES!
NO one range be it striking, grappling, trapping or throwing is superior to the other CONTRARY to the stupidity of the GRACIE FAMILY and fools who believe their sport mentality. All methods of fighting will work or not work depending on the circumstances, condition, environment and the individual or individuals involved.
Let see the idiotic Gracie's try to ground fight against a master samurai or shaolin swordsman with their swords and knowing(which all do)judo-jiu jitsu or aikido and on the shaolin side, CHIN NA, SHUAI CHIAO and better yet STOP A .50 CAL BROWNING MK-2 OR 3 MACHINE GUN. What are they going to do, use a TRIANGLE, FOUR SQUARE LOCK, elbow lock, arm lock, leg lock on a speeding bullet? Ever tried ground fighting in sand or concrete? There's a time and a place for any of the ranges, techniques and methods or a combination thereof. It's the determined and smart fighter who is successful most of time and some of the time, cause there is no guarantee in any fight or war to a larger scale.
The truth is, USE WHATEVER WORKS IF IT DOES WORK when you're involved...THE ART OF FIGHTING WITHOUT FIGHTING IS SOMETIMES BEST, IT'S CALLED A LAWSUIT!
